Why
Why we are doing this work:Barriers to a healthy life start early.
Chronic exposure to poverty, trauma, violence and racism — this is the reality of many women who give birth at ZSFG. These stressors impact birth outcomes, and later, can permanently change a child’s body and brain.
Guiding Research
Decades of research have shown that investing in pregnant women and their children leads to their future well-being and to the success of our society as a whole.
The first three years of a child’s life are critical. Without a strong foundation, children are at risk for a variety of behavioral, educational and health problems that diminish their lives and contribute to a number of long-term problems.
Equity
Solid Start’s work to advance equity begins with self-reflection and commitment to learning. After a full examination of our programs, we work across our systems of care to challenge institutional practices that keep social inequities in place. We are committed to addressing biases at all levels and to promoting equitable access to care and learning opportunities for all young children and their families.
