What is Solid Start?

Launched in 2015, the Solid Start Initiative at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center is a multi-disciplinary collaboration aimed at improving the health and well-being of women, infants, children and their families through evidence-based practice and systemic change.

Our Mission

The mission of the Solid Start initiative is to promote health and health equity by developing and evaluating innovative models of integrated care for pregnant women and families with children 0 – 3 at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. This includes ensuring that the social, legal, mental health and behavioral needs of families are incorporated systematically into quality care delivery across ZSFG clinical settings.

Our Vision

Leveraging UCSF faculty cross-disciplinary leadership, ZSFG hospital administration support, and generous philanthropic seed funding through our partnership with the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation, Solid Start seeks to fundamentally change the way healthcare is delivered. We aim to ensure “every door is an open door” and that all of ZSFG’s pregnant women and families with children 0-3 are identified and screened for social and behavioral health needs, in addition to receiving high quality medical care. This necessitates fundamental organizational culture change and a new model of care to be adopted across the hospital.

Governance

The primary function of the Solid Start Governance structure is to take responsibility for the planning, implementation, and achievement of outcomes for the Solid Start Initiative. The Solid Start Executive Committee helps facilitate systems change within ZSFG while the Steering Committee monitors and reviews the program status, as well as provides oversight of program deliverables. Finally, the Family Advisory Board, a committee of community members, provides input on how programs can be improved through a family and patient centric approach.

Strategic Plan

The Solid Start Strategic Plan is a statement of our priorities and strategies that will guide our work over the next 3-5 years years. This plan maintains the foundation of our strategic direction, builds on the successes of our past and current investments, and stays true to our vision of being a catalyst for ensuring that the developmental needs of children prenatal through age 5 are a priority in all sectors of the community.

The Strategic Plan builds upon extensive research and although much may have changed in the era of COVID-19, one thing remains constant: investing in pregnant individuals and young children’s health, early learning, and the well-being of their families and communities helps children succeed in school and later in life.

The Solid Start Strategic Plan includes 5 inter-related but distinct goals:

Goal 1: Develop and Promote a Patient Centered Care Model Across ZSFG Clinical Settings

Goal 2: Promote Systems Change and Sytems Alignment to Integrate Care

Goal 3: Sustain and Strengthen the Voice of Solid Start Families

Goal 4: Improve the Awareness and Understanding of Solid Start
