Nearly 600,000 babies will be born between mid-April and mid-June across the United States. Almost all of the people giving birth to these babies will be admitted to a hospital that will be under increased strain caused by the pandemic. As the anxiety of parents-to-be skyrockets, the Colorado Children’s Campaign, a policy advocacy organization, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment co-convened maternity care providers and community partners from across the state. This post outlines the four themes that arose from the discussion, presented as key steps that a variety of stakeholders must take. The authors hope these insights contribute to the efforts of policy makers in other states to tackle challenges faced by birthing people during the pandemic surge.
